In 2008, Reach Out and Read sites
in Lancaster County distributed nearly 10,000 books
at six different locations.
Attesting to the diversity
of the County, ROR sites have distributed books to
children in English, Spanish, Creole, Vietnamese, Arabic,
Russian, Chinese and Japanese.
The pediatric primary care provider gives every
child between the ages of 6 months and five years a new,
developmentally appropriate children’s book to take home and
keep. Siblings of the patient look forward to selecting
a gently-used book to take home and
keep.
The program focuses on children who come from
low income families.
The
map below displays areas in Lancaster County where poverty is
predominant. Areas in red and orange are the highest poverty
areas, based on students who are eligible for free and reduced
lunches at school. (click on
the map to see a larger version)
As you can see, the need is spread throughout
the county and we need Lancastrians to help support our
children....countywide.
